How big are Iguazú Falls?

Spanning over 2.7 kilometers with drops as high as 269 feet, Iguazú Falls flow over 62,000 cubic feet of water per second. That's enough to fill the entire Empire State Building with water every 10 minutes!

Where in the world are Iguazú Falls?

These world famous waterfalls are located where the Iguazú River tumbles over the edge of the Paraná Plateau, forming a natural border between Argentina and Brazil in the shape of an upside down “J”.

Where does the name Iguazú come from?

The name “Iguazú” creatively comes from the Tupi-Guarani words “y” meaning “water” and “ûasú meaning “big”.

How to get to Iguazú Falls

You can reach Iguazú Falls from either the Brazilian side via the town of Foz do Iguaçu or the Argentinian side via Puerto Iguazú (which is where we came from), or you can start at Ciudad del Este in Paraguay and boat upstream to reach the falls.

Iguazú National Park

The falls themselves are shared by two individual Iguazú National Parks, one in Argentina and the other in Brazil – both which were designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1980s.

We visited the falls on my birthday this past December on the Argentinian side, whose national park was one of the best and most organized national parks I've ever been to. The parks trails, bridges, and trains do such a great job of organizing the million plus tourists that visit each year, that we never felt crowded.

Iguazu Falls are are one of the most beautiful natural wonders of the world that I've ever laid eyes on, and well worth a visit while traveling South America. They definitely won't fall short of your expectations.
